If you've spent any time in North American outdoor communities, you'll have encountered the debate: lighter or ferro rod? The answer, honestly, is both — but for reasons that are worth understanding properly, because they change how you pack and how you use each one.
Here's a genuinely honest comparison.
A good quality windproof lighter is fast, reliable in reasonable conditions, and requires essentially no skill to use. Flick it, flame appears, done. For most camping situations — pitching a tent in calm conditions, lighting a stove at a campsite, starting a BBQ in the garden — a lighter is entirely sufficient.
The problems start when conditions aren't reasonable.

The honest disadvantage of a ferro rod is that it requires some practice. The technique — holding the rod stable against a tinder bundle, using a controlled scrape motion with the striker at the right angle and speed — takes a handful of attempts to feel natural. It's not difficult, but it's not instant either.
This matters because the worst time to learn a new skill is during an emergency. Practice with your ferro rod before you rely on it. Ten minutes in the garden, a few attempts at catching a spark on different materials. Once you've done it a few times, it becomes instinctive.
Experienced hikers and outdoor enthusiasts don't debate lighter vs ferro rod. They carry both, for the same reason pilots have multiple redundant systems — not because the primary one fails often, but because the consequences of failure at the wrong moment are too significant.
